कोरोना च्या संकटाने धडक दिल्यानंतर देशभर लॉकडाऊनची कडक अंमलबजावणी करण्यात आल्या. या लॉकडाऊन (Lockdown) मुळे अनेक घटकांचे हाल झाले. यामध्ये वेश्या व्यवसाय करणाऱ्या महिलांचाही समावेश आहे. एकही ग्राहक फिरकत नसल्याने वेश्या व्यवसाय करणाऱ्या महिलांची मोठी आर्थिक कोंडी झाली. लॉकडाऊनमध्ये शिथिलता आणण्यात आल्यानंतर आता वेश्या व्यवसायाला परवानगी देण्यात आली आहे, मात्र अशातच देशातील सर्वात मोठ्या रेड लाईट एरियापैकी एक असलेल्या पुण्यातील बुधवार पेठेतील वेश्या व्यवसाय करणाऱ्या महिलांबाबत एक धक्कादायक सर्व्हे समोर आला आहे.

बुधवार पेठेत वेश्या व्यवसाय करणाऱ्या तब्बल 99 % महिला रोजीरोटीसाठी दुसऱ्या पर्यायाच्या शोधात आहेत, असं आशा केअर ट्रस्टने केलेल्या सर्वेक्षणातून स्पष्ट झालं आहे. लॉकडाऊन (Lockdown) काळात कोरोनाच्या भीतीमुळे रेड लाईट एरियात पुरुष फिरकत नसल्याने इथल्या महिलांवर आर्थिक संकट ओढावलं. यातून अनेक महिला कर्जबाजारी झाल्याचंही स्पष्ट झालं आहे. 85 टक्के महिलांनी कर्ज घेतलं असून यातील 98 टक्के महिलांनी वेश्यालय मालक, व्यवस्थापक आणि सावकारांकडून हे कर्ज घेतलं आहे.

बुधवार पेठ हा देशातील तिसरा सर्वात मोठा रेड लाईट एरिया आहे. इथं एकूण 700 घरं असून 3 हजार सेक्स वर्कर्स काम करतात. यातील 300 महिलांना भेटून आशा केअर ट्रस्टने हा सर्व्हे केला आहे. यामध्ये महिलांनी एक भीषण वास्तवही समोर आणलं आहे. 87 टक्के महिलांच्या मते लॉकडाऊनच्या आधीही आम्हाला या व्यवसायातून जे पैसे मिळत होते, त्यातून आम्ही आमच्या व आमच्या कुटुंबाच्या मुलभूत गरजाही पूर्ण करू शकत नव्हतो. शिक्षण नसल्याने उदरनिर्वाहासाठी दुसरीकडे कुठे काम मिळू शकत नाही, त्यामुळे येथील महिला या काळ्या कोठडीतून बाहेर पडू शकत नाहीत.

“कोव्हिडच्या साथीने आम्हाला लैंगिक कामगारांचे पुनर्वसन करण्याची यंत्रणा तयार करण्याची संधी दिली आहे. आमचे सर्वेक्षण असे सुचविते की बुधवार पेठ भागातील बहुतेक सर्व महिला रोजीरोटीचे पर्यायी स्त्रोत पाहात आहेत. वेश्याव्यवसायाची निवड न करणार्‍या महिलांना कर्ज फेडण्यासाठी आणि नवीन आयुष्य सुरू करण्यास मदत करण्यासाठी तस्करीग्रस्त पीडित महिलांना मदत निधी द्यावा,” अशी मागणी आशा केअर ट्रस्टच्या अध्यक्षा शीला शेट्टी (Shila Shetty) यांनी केली आहे.

According to a survey conducted by Asha Care Trust, 99% of the women engaged in prostitution in Peth on Wednesday are looking for another alternative for their livelihood. Fear of corona during the lockdown caused financial crisis for women in the red light area as men did not turn around. It has also become clear that many women are in debt. Eighty-five per cent of women have taken loans, of which 98 per cent have taken loans from brothel owners, managers and moneylenders.

Budhwar Peth is the third largest red light area in the country. There are a total of 700 houses and 3,000 sex workers. The survey was conducted by Asha Care Trust after meeting 300 of them. In this, women have brought out a grim reality. According to 87% of women, even before the lockdown, the money we were getting from this business, we could not even meet the basic needs of ourselves and our family. Due to lack of education, there is no place to get a job for subsistence, so the women here cannot get out of this black cell.

“Covid’s partner has given us the opportunity to create a mechanism to rehabilitate sex workers. Our survey suggests that almost all women in the Wednesday Peth area are looking for alternative sources of livelihood. Funds should be provided to women victims of trafficking to help them repay their debts and start a new life, ”said Shila Shetty, President, Asha Care Trust.
